2018 Andrea Oberto Barbera d’Alba

Region: Piedmont, Italy

Viticulture:  Sustainable

Winemaker Andrea & Fabio Oberto

Established: 1959

100% Barbera from 6.3 ha in La Morra. Vineyards are southwest facing with clay-limestone soils. Ripe clusters are hand-picked  with careful quality-selection. Fruit is destemmed and crushed within a few hours from the harvest. The must is fermented with frequent yet careful pump overs followed by a medium-lengthy maceration on the skins for 180 hours. The wine then goes to steel tanks where it undergoes spontaneous malolactic fermentation. 60% of the wine ages in stainless steel tank for 8 months and 40% in new oak barrels for 6 months.

Sommelier’s Recommendation This is everything you want and expect from quality Piedmont Barbera! Smells & tastes of red & dark berries, white pepper, & dried herbs. Elegant and powerful at the same time with vibrant acidity and soft tannins. This wine is ready to be enjoyed now and suitable for long cellar aging.

Andrea Oberto grew up working on his family’s farm in the small town of La Morra just South of Verduno but spent the early part of his adulthood outside of the family business. When his father passed unexpectedly, he returned home to manage the farm and devoted his life to tending to the 3 ha of vineyards he inherited from his father. In 1978, Andrea shifted the estate’s focus from supplying fruit to the local co-operatives to making its own wines. Today, the Andrea Oberto estate continues to be a family-owned operation and is now made up of 16 ha that produce fine wines exported around the world. Andrea works the land with the same enthusiasm that he acquired from the start of his career, while his son Fabio operates the winery.
