Region: Chianti Classico DOCG

Viticulture: Conventional

Winemaker: Paolo De Marchi

Established Date: 1956

Paolo De Marchi’s excellent Chianti Classico is elegant and supple, full of perfumed fruit, with depth, structure and minerality.  The palate has a supple, lithe character full of perfumed fruit and is given depth by a mineral vein. 82% Sangiovese , 15% Canaiolo, 3% Syrah/Shiraz fermentation took place in tank with 15 days maceration and pumping-over twice a day. Maturation for one year in old  barrels (except 5% in new oak) and 4,00 litre oak casks to add some fine, integrated tannins.

Sommelier’s Recommendation

I love Paolo di Marchi’s wines. He is an incredible winemaker, leader in the region and someone who is always working to improve the quality of his wines, even if it annoys  those who prefer to stay in the past. This  wine is a Classic example of a great chianti. Bright red fruits smack you in the face which is typical of sangiovese. Sour cherrys on the palate to get your mouth watering and the soft, supple tannins add complexity to the wine. This would be perfect with all those foods you can think of when you think of Tuscany- ripe tomoatoes, garlic, pancetta, pasta

Isole e Olena is located on the western slope of the Chianti Classico hills half way between Florence and Siena at an altitude of 350-490 m. All the wines are estate wines produced only from the grapes grown on the estate’s 56 hectars of vineyards, owned by the De Marchi family since 1956 and managed by Paolo De Marchi since 1976. In the past 40 years the vineyards have gone through an extensive replanting project placing Isole e Olena in the small group of estates leading the Chianti renaissance.

The name Isole e Olena came about in the 1950s when two adjoining estates, Isole and Olena, were purchased by the De Marchi family and combined to form one. The history of both estates dates back many hundreds of years, and the earliest documentation of the village of Olena goes as far back as the 12th century. During the 1950s, the De Marchi family planted new specialised vineyards and expanded the cellars. Today, the estate is run by Paolo De Marchi and his wife Marta. Paolo comes from a family with three generations of winemaking experience in the northern part of Piemonte and his older son, Luca, now runs the family estate there, Proprieta Sperino.
