Wine Tasting note:

The idea for an early-release, low-sulphur, unfiltered Grenache had been bubbling away for a few years and in 2017 access to the right fruit from a dry-grown vineyard, sparked the Basso project into life. From the Latin Bassus, meaning low, Basso is low in additions and speaks clearly of the place from which it comes. Primary red fruit aromas, backed up by cassia bark, star anise, white pepper and strangely gamay-like florals (no whole bunch used). The palate is loaded with musk and sherbet and those primary red fruit flavours follow through.

Sommeliers Recommendation: What a great wine from a fantastic winemaker. Stephen is a genuis when it comes to crafting wines in McLaren Vale. This wine has very little done to it so the pristine fruit can truely shine. Long, fine and dusty tannins finish off this stunner that can be enjoyed with or without food.

Established in 2004, S.C. Pannell is a celebration of Stephen and Fiona Pannell’s adopted region of McLaren Vale.  Stephen’s passion for creating an eclectic and colourful expression of new wine styles has been shaped by his extensive winemaking career both locally and abroad. Influenced by his childhood upbringing on Margaret River’s renowned Moss Wood estate, and his tenures at some of the leading family estates of Bordeaux, Burgundy, Barolo and Priorat, Stephen has heralded a pathway for Mediterranean varieties daring to create wines that challenge the norm of the ‘Vale and beyond. While recognising, and celebrating, the region’s established styles, Stephen’s belief that a benign, Mediterranean climate and a complex mosaic of ancient geology could foster a palate of varieties has led to signature wines such as Grenache, Tempranillo, Touriga Nacional, Aglianico, Nero d’Avola and Fiano, among others.
